Metallica, one of the biggest bands on the planet, are to play a unique gig for BBC Radio 1.Taking place at the BBC Radio Theatre in London on Sunday 14 September 2008, the show will be broadcast the following day (Monday 15 September) on Radio 1 from 9.00pm.

The performance forms the centrepiece of an evening of programming devoted to the legendary band, including an access all areas interview with all four members.

Listeners can register for a chance to get tickets for the gig and will be selected randomly. Registration opens via this page on the Radio 1 website at 7.30pm on Tuesday 2 September. The registration closes on Friday 5 September at 7.30pm.

Full broadcast schedule (Monday 15 September):

  • 7.00-9.00pm: Zane Lowe celebrates the influence of Metallica including contributions from Lost Prophets, Funeral For A Friend, Slipknot and Black Tide. Plus Lars Ulrich’s personal Guide To Metallica.
  • 9.00-10.00pm: Radio 1 Present… Metallica. The gig
  • 10.00-11.00pm: Daniel P Carter continues the night with brand new album tracks and classics.
  • 11.00pm-midnight: Radio 1 Stories: Metallica. A no holds barred documentary as Daniel P Carter talks to them about their past, their present, and their future.

Radio 1 Rockshow host Daniel P Carter says: “This last couple of months have been pretty great for Metallica fans. ”Like many, I have got that feeling of anticipation back as we await the release of the new album. ”I personally feel like the kid that sat listening to Ride The Lightning for the first time with the stereo cranked.”I got to hear Death Magnetic at an exclusive and very loud playback with a mate and I had that feeling.

“I got to see Metallica headline and totally destroy the festival that meant so much to me as I was growing up near Reading and I got to speak with the band that not only changed the definition of heavy music but also changed my life. ”Now I’ll get to stand in the legendary BBC Radio Theatre with a small group of truly diehard fans and I know that I will not be able to believe how things have panned out! ”This show is a first for Radio 1 and a first for Metallica. It’s going to be fantastic!”
