Guitar Connectivity

Submitted by Muze on Friday, 5 September 2008No Comment

Selecting the right guitar to computer interface has always been problematic. Latency, compatibility and finally the ability to easily hear what you are playing have all be issues with some products.

Not to harp on and on about Native Instruments gear but their latest hardware release is certainly a very attractive offering. Guitar Rig session is a hardware and software combo for both Mac and PC. At the heart of the package is the new Guitar Rig 3 XE software, which offers a selection of five true-to-life tube amplifier models and 12 cabinet types, as well as 21 stomp boxes and effect units.

The software comes with over 150 instantly playable tones from different musical eras and genres is
included, together with several helpful tools including dual tape-decks, metronome, tuner, and a dedicated Live View. Brilliant but beaten by the fact I have the full guitar rig package already :)

The attraction for me is the guitar / computer interface, a new USB 2.0 stereo audio interface
specifically designed for guitarists. The unit boasts 2 high-quality instrument preamps and studio-grade 24bit/192kHz “Cirrus Logic audio converters enable pristine audio quality, while low-latency drivers provide excellent feel and responsiveness under all conditions” according the website that is anyway.

The device really is laden with features :

In addition to Guitar Rig and hardware the Guitar Rig Session includes the powerful 64-track music sequencer Cubase 4 LE, as well as the ‘Kore Player’ software instrument combined with the versatile ‘Pop Drums’ acoustic drum library – providing a complete creative arsenal to record and produce
music on any computer.

I have to say the YouTube coverage has me sold but I am still debating whether a stomp box and amp although a little old fashioned may be less stress ?

With the looming credit crunch I am seriously considering this device and Mac as an alternative to a new amp. I admit I’m nervous but Radiohead have gone Native Instruments, Steve Jones swears by the system but at £200 I’ll do a little more research in the next few weeks.
