Sullem Voe : All Naked Flames

There is no doubt that September is the month for epic new releases. Neil Finn and Pearl Jam (to name but two) offer up new releases and one album we managed to get our hands on an early  is the brilliant debut by Sullem Voe entitled ‘All Naked Flames’. If you haven’t heard of the band before you are without doubt missing a real treat. ‘All Naked Flames’ comes recommended for fans of Underworld, Radiohead,U2 and Nick Drake but I would put this debut album up there with any of these artists first releases.

Sullem Voe taps into a nation’s collective unease and societal ills on their debut offering. The album has the sound of a veteran indie rock band, mature, confident and excellently produced.

The songs are melodic, emotional and addictive. I have to admit that I listen to a lot of music and the songs that remains on my regularly iTunes playlist do tend to be the established bands such as Radiohead, Pearl Jam et al but ‘All Naked Flames’ is probably one of the first debut releases with tracks that goes directly to favourite.

Twelve songs on a debut release is definitely more than many bands offer up but ‘All Naked Flames’ suggests Sullem Voe are a band with a massive skill range who are exploring a range of musical avenues. This most certainly isn’t a negative comment ‘All Naked Flames’ is well beyond a polished debute. The sheer quality of this releases suggest to me (anyway) that when Sullem Voe find their niche sound we will be looking at one of the next Irish music success story.

Twelve perfectly crafted songs pack this debut release. Intelligent, designed and perfectly produced. This is music for the discerning. It should definitely be on the BUY list !
